Tourette Syndrome as a Qualifying Condition

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurological disorder characterized by repetitive, involuntary movements and vocalizations called tics. It typically begins in childhood and varies widely in severity — from mild and manageable to significantly disabling. In New Jersey, Tourette syndrome qualifies for the medical cannabis program when symptoms have not been adequately controlled with standard medications.

Standard pharmacological treatments for Tourette's — including antipsychotics, alpha agonists, and other agents — often carry significant side effect burdens, particularly for long-term use. Cannabis represents an alternative with a different side effect profile that some patients tolerate better.

Evidence for Cannabis in Tourette's

Multiple small clinical trials and observational studies have found that THC can reduce tic frequency and severity in Tourette syndrome patients. A 2003 randomized controlled trial found significant tic reduction with THC. Additional studies have found improvements in both tic counts and quality of life, with the most robust evidence for adult patients.

The evidence base for Tourette's is smaller than for conditions like chronic pain or PTSD, but it is sufficient to support a physician evaluation for patients who have not responded adequately to conventional treatments.

What to Expect

Your evaluation will include a review of your Tourette's history, previous medications tried, co-occurring conditions (OCD and ADHD are common in TS), and current symptom burden. We provide guidance on product selection and dosing that minimizes the risk of worsening anxiety or other psychiatric symptoms sometimes associated with cannabis use in this population.
